Views from Frigiliana

The historic quarter of Frigiliana, of all those in the entire province, is considered to be one that has best preserved its original Moorish form. Its anarchic street plan-anarchic from the twenty-first century perspective-leads the visitor from one surprise to another: unexpectedly massive architecture, streets, alleys, covered passageways, stairways, plants and flowers in the most unlikely places, a mixture of fragrances from hidden sources, ancient history in new whitewash… And once you leave the intimacy and constriction of its streets, the breadth of a superb landscape above the Eastern Costa del Sol.

The romantic villa: Villa Fresh

Villa Fresh, Costa del Sol, Andalusia- SPAINVilla Fresh crowns a plot of grand dimensions, with a heliport and courts for both tennis and “padel”. In its manicured, grassy garden guests have complete privacy to bask beneath the celestial king that gives this coastal region its name. Designed to marry comfort and luxury, the magnificent master suite of 200 square meters, which also boasts a king sized bed along with two dressing rooms with jacuzzi, massage and saunas, and two separate en-suite bathrooms. The careful, classical decoration of the internal rooms showcases materials of the highest quality, such as the marbles and hardwoods of the floors. The double TV and piano lounge has its own bar area for social gatherings. Guests can attend to unforeseen issues in complete comfort from the villa’s office with its cozy fireplace, or relax with a good book in the hands of its library.

The unforgettable present: Ford Thunderbird

Imagine arriving to the villa of your dreams and find in the garage a wonderful vintage car just waiting for you. The first Ford Thunderbird imported in Spain, a time trip to 1955. Picture yourself driving the old beauty through such emblematic and historical places as Frigiliana. Imagine now that you can have this car back home a rolling memory from the trip of your live.

History and religion in Majorca

Drive or walk to a hilltop sanctuary to experience ‘the other Mallorca’. There are several ermitas, hermitages, santuaries and monastries dotted throughout Mallorca, mainly dating back to Medieval times. Originally inhabited by monks, they were places of pilgrimage. Nowadays, they provide excellent starting points for hikes, and you can spend the night in some of them if you are not afraid of a fairly basic room.

Ermita de Betlem, Arta

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Ermita de Betlem was founded in 1805 by the monks of Saint Honoratus, Randa and the Holy Trinity of Valldemossa. The church has a solar clock and a rose window, and lies at the end of a cypress tree-lined driveway. The hermitage is completed by orchards, a fountain and outbuildings (including an ancient water-mill) that allowed the monks to live self-sufficiently. The site lies right next to the sea and there are several paths that lead both along the coastline and back through the Llevent Natural Park to Arta.

Sanctuary de la Mare de Déu del Puig

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Nuns settled on Puig de Maria (‘Mary’s mountain’) in 1371 and remained for several hundred years, refusing to leave even when the Bishop of Palma ordered them down for their own safety. The convent is still there, on top of the mountain – the chapel smells of incense and the refectory of woodsmoke. You can stay in simple rooms in the sanctuary here, but don’t expect luxury – you pay extra if you take a shower. The caretaker will rustle up a paella for dinner to save you the long walk back to town. The puig is a hill just outside of Pollenca, and takes about an hour to climb, or you can drive up a terrifying & narrow potholed road, and be rewarded with views over Cap de Formentor and the entire northeastern coast – as well as back down over Pollenca.

Puig de Randa, Central Mallorca

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Puig de Randa, rising 543m out of the plain, has been a place of pilgrimage ever since Ramon Llull founded Mallorca’s first hermitage here in 1275. He arrived aged 40, shaken by an incident that made him re-assess his way of life. Bent on seduction, he had chased a married woman through Palma on horseback. Unable to shake him off, she lifted her blouse to reveal cancerous breasts, and Llull retired in isolation to Puig de Randa to ponder a life of youthful excess.

The sense of history is somewhat offset by the radio mast on the mountain top and the electric candles in the church, but this is still a special place. Visit the Sala Gramatica to see Llull’s original manuscripts and a bottle of 1934 Chartreuse made in the monastery, then look out from the terrace at the views of the plain, with Palma Bay and the isle of Cabrera in the distance. Simple rooms are available in a modern pilgrims’ block.

Arab Baths

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

These 10th century baths are virtually all that remain of the Arab city of Medina Mayurqa (now known as Palma). They were probably part of a nobleman’s house and are similar to those found in other Islamic cities. The tepidarium has a dome in the shape of a half orange, with 25 round shafts for sun light, supported by a dozen columns. Notice how each of the columns is different – they were probably salvaged from the ruins of various Roman buildings, an early example of recycling. Hammams were meeting-places as well as wash-houses, and the courtyard with its cactus, palm and orange trees would have made a pleasant place to cool off after a hot bath. Open: 9.30AM – 6.00PM all year round. There is a small entry fee.

Where to Stay?

Most of the villas in Majorca have a nice cozy country style. Some are simple, some are more stylish but usually there is something in common difficult to explain. Is something you have to feel!

Take a piece of history with you

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

One if our obessions when travelling is to find the perfect souvenir. Something nice that evoque what we felt when we were somewhere. But isn’t an easy job and many times you buy it in the airport, in asouvenir shop where nothing is special or just get for yourself a nice dress.

Did you know that one of the most characteristic trends in Barcelona is the vintage furniture? There are many new shops with very original coleccions of chairs, tables, lamps and other pieces form de 50’s and 70’s . But what make them special is that any of them is like another, each shop has behind an artist who get old furniture and make a beautiful new piece.

I know what you are thinking, bring a cupboard back home is not exactly what you had in mind of when talking about souvenirs. Slightly big, right? But many times these shops are almost an art gallery, it is worthy just to visit them and then you can choose this little alarm clock, exactly like the one your grandpa used to have! Or a cute lamp that goes perfect with everything. And everytime you see these objects in your home you’ll remember that had the chance to visit the real Barcelona, you felt the new trends in its streets and get home the most beautiful of it.

Sport Holidays in Catalunya

Catalonia is a country with a long sports tradition. Apart from organising sporting events which have gone down in history, such as the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and having world class facilities and celebrated clubs, over 300 sports are played in Catalonia at its more than 11,000 sports venues.

Swimming, athletics, mountain biking, skydiving, tennis, sailing, cycling, rowing, football, water polo… The land and the infrastructure created for sports tourism, featuring high quality resources and services, make Catalonia into a destination of choice for high-performance sport.

If you are a fan of sports, this is your country! Let’s see what can you do:

Hiking in Aigüestortes

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Located between the regions of Pallars Sobirà and La Alta Ribagorça, the 105 square kilometres of Aigüestortes is the only national park of Catalonia. As its name suggests, one of its characteristics is water, which we can find in all its states and forms: rivers, waterfalls, ponds, glacial valleys, with almost 200 mountain lakes.

Its most famous form is the Lake of Sant Maurici, an area of great beauty that can be found at the foot of the park’s most mythical mountain: the Encantats, a fragmented calcareous rock formation which is said to be the silhouette of two hunters cursed by the divine powers when they went to hunt chamois (a type of deer).

he park is home to other species of great ecological value, some native to the area. The vegetation changes according to the altitude, from Mediterranean forests to alpine landscapes. The fir tree and mountain pine forests, the alpine pastures and the scree-slopes are home to animals such as the capercaillie, the chamois, the marmot or the bearded vulture.

There are five itineraries for discovering all corners of the park, of different duration and with different levels of difficulty.

Rafting, Hidrospeed & Kayak

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Talking about going down a white water river conjures up thoughts of adrenaline and emotions experienced on an inflatable raft. If one is looking for a controlled adventure for people of all ages, rafting is perfect.
The sections of a river that are best for this sport are located in high mountain areas. The best season is spring, during the thawing period, when the volume of the water increases and the river flows faster than normal. Many companies in Catalonia provide guides, equipment and information, such as Ràfting Llavorsí, which has over ten years’ experience and whose headquarters are in the municipality of Llavorsí. Practically all these companies are located along the Noguera Pallaresa River, given that it has the best conditions for this sport: the ideal volume, drops and varying levels of difficulty.

The Noguera Pallaresa is the best river in Europe for practicing hidrospeed, with over sixty kilometres that are ideal for river-boarding. Before going down, the instructor gathers the group together on land and explains how to handle the board, control the speed, make turns, etc. The group then gets into easy waters, where all the instructions are put into practice, after which they are ready to begin the descent. One of the many Catalan companies that provides the equipment and training necessary for river-boarding is Yeti Emotions in Llavorsí (region of El Pallars Sobirà, Lleida).

There are different styles of kayaking. Rodeo kayaking consists of performing acrobatics in a specific white-water area. The descent is done by moving down a stretch of river at the fastest possible speed. Kayak polo is a ball game played with kayaks and goals in either a pool or in natural waters. Sea kayaking uses boats that are specially designed to resist the impact of the waves and is very well-established along the Catalan coast. All these variations require continuous practice. Beginners should learn the most basic techniques in calm waters. One of the companies that teaches these techniques is Yeti Emotions, headquartered in Llavorsí (El Pallars Sobirà region, Lleida). The 2-hour kayak “baptism” course in calm waters will give first-timers an idea of what it feels like on board one of these boats.

Flying!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

All you need if you want to go paragliding is a desire to fly. You will feel an exhilarating sensation of freedom as you float in silence gazing down over the panoramic views from this engineless flying machine. The interior of Catalonia is one of the best areas in Spain for this activity, and there are many companies that provide the equipment and all the necessary information. For example, Entrenúvols, the oldest school in Spain, has very experienced pilots, guides and instructors, and is located in the middle of the Vall d’Áger valley, in the La Noguera region of Lleida. The flights take off from the summit of Serra del Montsec and land next to the town of Áger. It also offers initiation courses, which do not require any prior knowledge or training, as well as advanced and safety courses which allow gliders to improve their technique.

Anyone in good health can enjoy this experience. The parachute is a flying device that consists of a dome (similar to a large umbrella) and a harness designed to significantly reduce the speed of the free fall. The design has improved over time and parachutes can now control the speed of the drop and the effect of the wind, and maintain stability based on the weight and shape of the object being transported. The parachuting school Skydive, in Empuriabrava (Girona), is known all over the world. There are two ways of becoming familiar with parachuting and learning the techniques: the AFF course (Accelerated Free Fall) and the tandem jump (jump with a two-person parachute). The AFF and AFF introductory parachuting courses are for people who decide to practice free-fall and train as parachutists. The tandem jump is the simplest and fastest way to get started. The instructor is in charge of all aspects of the jump and control does not depend solely on the participant.

The Night of Fire

Sant Joan, summer solstice. Catalonia

Sant Joan in Roses. Pic: Jordi Payà

The Feast of Sant Joan celebrates the start of the summer. It is the longest day of the year and what is known as the Summer Solstice in England. It is one of the most important feast days for Catalans and is celebrated throughout the cities. The idea is that on the night of Sant Joan the sun reaches its highest point, before beginning to drop. The sun is seen as a symbol of fertility and wealth and so it must be given strength. The strength is provided by bonfires and fireworks lit throughout the city for Sant Joan.

It is said to be three symbols of Sant Joan – fire, water and herbs. Fire symbolises purity, and for this reason fires are lit. Water symbolises healing. Therefore, on this night, in some areas people bathe in the sea. Herbs symbolise remedy and some claim that for the night of Sant Joan their healing qualities are enhanced one hundred times over. These are often picked on the night of Sant Joan.

Sant Joan is often described by Catalans as the ‘Nit del Foc’ – meaning the ‘Night of Fire’. The main aspect to the celebrations is fireworks. In the days leading up to the celebrations you will see temporary fireworks shops open up throughout the city, with queues down the street. Many groups of families and friends organise their own parties – known as ‘Revetlles’. Barcelona is a city made up of balconies and terraces, therefore those with the largest balcony or the best views of the city invite friends and family to watch fireworks, eat and dance the night away.

During the early part of the evening the local restaurants along the beach front put out extra tables, chairs and decorations. The restaurants are popular with the locals, who start the night with a large dinner – lining their stomachs for the long night of drinking and dancing that lies ahead. If you do not have a friend’s party to go to, the most common place for people to head to for Sant Joan is the beach. Barceloneta beach begins filling up during the early evening on  23 June , with groups who bring picnics and cava to watch the fireworks displays and listen to the music playing in the chiringuitos (beach bars). Groups of musicians and drummers also gather to provide the sound track to the evening’s events.

Where to stay?

If you are thinking of celebrating this night in Spain you must choose a villa in the beach. One of our favorites is Villa Rail since have direct access to the beach and is located in the Maresme, an area in catalunya were traditions like Sant Joan are strong.
